Industrial self-cleaning coatings
Regarding industrial processes, our products can be applied in many ways. Proven techniques are both HVLP spraying and roller/squeegee application. Apart from the mode of application, the decisive factor for the layer thickness are the physical properties of the respective surface.
Also for the drying and hardening of titanium dioxide layers, there are different options available, as especially industrial processes are often limited by very small time-frames for drying and hardening. Apart from existing process heat, a proven means is IR-drying in junction with integral UV systems.
With reference to industrial processes, application is possible in many ways. Apart form proven spray application, coating is also possible by roller, squeegee or dipping. In any case, the supply of heat is useful or required, in order to accelerate drying/hardening and to improve bonding.
Some highlights of titanium dioxide in the industrial sector:
- Used as an additive or coating
- As a colorless or transparent coating
- High durability with a lifetime of 10 to 15 years
- Is not degraded by UV radiation
- Photo catalysis is sustained and effective
Spray Application:
HVLP is a proven spay application. The advantage of the HVLP technology is a high transfer of material. The coating is applied very concentratively to the surface, it causes little overspray (fogging) only, with least loss of material. The spray application is particularly suitable for the coating of structured surfaces, but also for glass and ceramic surfaces.
Roller Application:
Coil coating, also referred to as coil coating or continuous coating metal strip, is the process for coating one or both sides of flat steel or aluminum tapes. The process is extremely efficient. The coating material is almost fully applied, it does not cause any overspray as is the case e.g. for spray application. In general, two-step coating systems for primer and paint can also be used, with minor modifications, for the application of titanium dioxide. However, rheology and viscosity of the coating material will have to be adapted to the respective roller system.
Dip Application:
There are many kinds of surfaces which can be coated with titanium dioxideby an immersion process. In this case, the surface is uniformly wetted by dipping and take-out at a constant speed. For this particular application, planar, cylindrical or slightly curved uniaxial elements are ideal. Homogeneous layer thicknesses can be achieved by vibration-free adjustment of the pulling speed. Dip application is particularly suitable for industrial coating of solar glass prior to further processing.
Drying/Hardening:
Controlled heating improves the drying and hardeing of a coating. Depending on the product used, the supply of heat may be mandatory for the production of a photocatalytically active layer. The utilizable temperature range for industrial drying processes is between 85 and 600°C. High temperatures will shorten the drying/hardening times.
